Dental Sealants

Dental sealants protect children's back teeth from decay, quick, painless and highly effective. Available in Waterdown at (289) 799-3355.

A Two-Minute Treatment That Prevents Years of Problems

The chewing surfaces of back molars are covered in deep grooves, narrower than a single toothbrush bristle. Food and bacteria settle into them and no amount of good brushing reliably gets them out. That is why the overwhelming majority of childhood cavities occur on these surfaces. A sealant is a thin protective coating flowed into those grooves and hardened with a curing light. It seals the vulnerable surface completely.

How It Works

1

The tooth is cleaned and dried

no freezing, no drilling.

2

A conditioning gel is applied for a few seconds and rinsed away.

3

The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves.

4

A blue curing light hardens it in seconds.

5

Your child’s bite is checked and they are done.

When to Seal

First permanent molars arrive around age six, second permanent molars around age twelve. Sealing them soon after they erupt gives the best protection, because the grooves have had the least time to accumulate bacteria. Baby molars can also be sealed in children at high cavity risk.

How Long Do They Last?

Sealants commonly last several years and are checked at every routine visit. If one chips or wears, it is simply topped up, again without freezing or drilling.

Good to Know

Frequently asked questions

Do sealants contain BPA?

Modern sealants release only trace amounts, far below any level of concern, and the cavity-prevention benefit is well established. We are happy to discuss the specific material we use.

Does my child still need to brush sealed teeth?

Yes. Sealants protect the grooves, not the sides of the teeth or the gumline.

Are sealants covered by insurance?

Most plans cover sealants for children on permanent molars. We can check your specific coverage before treatment.
