Sleep Dentistry (General Anaesthesia)

Sleep Dentistry for Children: Onsite in Our Building

Full sleep dentistry for children in Waterdown, general anaesthesia in a licensed surgical centre in our own building. No hospital waitlist.

All the Treatment, One Appointment, Fully Asleep

For some children, treatment while awake is simply not realistic, because of the amount of work needed, a very young age, severe anxiety, or complex medical and developmental needs. Sleep dentistry lets everything be completed safely in a single session, with your child fully asleep and feeling nothing. Your child goes to sleep, we complete every filling, crown and extraction that is needed, and they wake up finished. No repeat appointments, no accumulated fear, no dreading the next one.

Our treatment room
Licensed suite, one floor up

Performed at Panacea Surgical Centre: One Floor Up

This is where we differ from almost every other children’s practice in the region. General anaesthesia is not something we refer out and it is not something you wait a year for. It is performed at our on-site licensed surgical suite, a fully certified and licensed facility located directly within our facility at 105 Clappison Avenue. You park once. You walk into the same building. Your child is treated in a purpose-built surgical suite with full monitoring, and you are with them in recovery a short while later. Our on-site licensed surgical suite is a fully certified facility where we perform general anaesthesia, ensuring the highest standards of safety and care for our patients.

Why This Matters

Families whose children need dental treatment under general anaesthesia are usually told to join a hospital waiting list. Those waits can stretch for many months, and during that time a child with active decay is often in pain, missing school, and needing repeat courses of antibiotics. Small problems become big ones while the family waits. Because we have surgical facilities in our own building, we can schedule your child’s treatment in a timeframe that reflects their actual clinical need.

When Sleep Dentistry Is the Right Choice

How the Day Works

1

A pre-anaesthetic assessment and full medical review beforehand.

2

Strict fasting instructions, which must be followed exactly, this is a genuine safety requirement.

3

You stay with your child until they are asleep.

4

Treatment is completed in one session, typically one to three hours depending on what is needed.

5

Your child is monitored continuously throughout by a qualified anaesthesia provider.

6

You are with them again in recovery, and you go home the same day.

7

Expect grogginess and occasionally nausea for the rest of the day.

8

A follow-up appointment within a week or two.

Safety

General anaesthesia is administered and monitored by a qualified anaesthesia provider, never by the dentist performing the treatment. Your child’s airway, oxygen levels, heart rate and blood pressure are monitored continuously from the moment they fall asleep until they are fully awake. We will not proceed if your child is unwell on the day. Even a mild cold changes how anaesthesia is tolerated, and rescheduling is always the right call. We would rather move an appointment than take a risk.

An Honest Word About the Decision

No parent wants to hear that their child needs a general anaesthetic, and we do not recommend it lightly. If there is a reasonable way to treat your child awake, or to stabilize things with silver diamine fluoride while they grow into being able to cope, we will tell you. But when it is the right call, it is genuinely the kinder option, one appointment with no memory of it, instead of a year of frightening visits.

Good to Know

Frequently asked questions

Is general anaesthesia safe for children?

When provided by qualified anaesthesia practitioners with proper monitoring in a licensed facility, it has a strong safety record. We will discuss the specific risks and benefits for your child individually before you decide.

How long will we wait for an appointment?

Because we have surgical facilities in our own building rather than relying on hospital operating time, we can usually schedule far sooner than a hospital waitlist allows. Call us and we will give you a realistic timeframe.

Do we need a referral?

No. Parents can call us directly, and we also accept referrals from dentists and physicians.

Can I be with my child?

You stay until they are asleep, and you are with them again in recovery.

How long does treatment take?

Typically one to three hours depending on how much work is needed, plus recovery time. You will be home the same day.

Is it covered by insurance?

Coverage varies considerably between plans. We provide a written estimate and can submit a pre-determination to your insurer before booking so there are no surprises.

Will my child remember it?

No. That is much of the point: children come through the experience without the fear that repeated awake treatment can build.
