When Should the First Visit Happen?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. It feels early to most parents: but at that age the visit is largely about checking development, spotting early risk, and letting your child learn that this is a safe place. If your child is older and has never been seen, that is completely fine. There is no wrong time to start.

How to Prepare Your Child

1

Keep it light. Avoid words like ‘hurt’, ‘needle’ or ‘drill’, even in reassurance, they plant the idea.

2

Read a picture book about visiting the dentist in the days beforehand.

3

Schedule for when your child is rested and fed, not at the end of a long day.

4

Let us do the explaining. We are practised at it, and children often accept it more easily from us.

5

Stay calm yourself. Children read parental anxiety instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in the room with my child?

Yes, always. Parents are welcome in the treatment room at every appointment.

What if my child cries or refuses?

It happens constantly and it does not bother us. We slow down, try a different approach, and sometimes a first visit is simply a ride in the chair and a look at the mirror. That still counts as a success.

Will you take X-rays at the first visit?

Only if they are needed. We take a conservative approach and use digital imaging, which uses significantly less radiation than traditional film.
